In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and across several African societies, women have faced social, economic and cultural barriers that restrict their participation in public life and development. Traditional attitudes have sometimes confined women to domestic responsibilities, depriving communities of their skills and contributions.
Why FECONDE was founded
In response to these inequalities and to the vulnerability of women and children, including sexual and gender-based violence, women joined forces to advance dignity, protection, access to information and empowerment. Femme Congolaise pour le Développement (FECONDE) was established on 30 September 2004 in Bukavu, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Presence and development
According to its institutional account, FECONDE operates in four provinces: South Kivu, Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé and Ituri. In Ituri, activities extend to Djugu, Irumu, Mambasa and Mahagi. Areas of work mentioned include awareness-raising literacy initiatives and support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
